['dɑːməʊdɑː] der, Fluss in Nordostindien, 590 km lang, entspringt im Chota-Nagpur-Plateau im Bundesstaat Bihar, mündet im Bundesstaat West Bengal in den Hugli. Im Rahmen des 1948 begonnenen Damodar Valley Project, das das gesamte Einzugsgebiet des Damodar umfasst und die Industrieansiedlung in einem Gebiet reicher Kohlevorkommen förderte, wurden mehrere Staudämme mit Kraftwerken errichtet und ein Energieverbundsystem mit vorhandenen Kohlekraftwerken geschaffen. Die Stauseen dienen außerdem zur Wasserversorgung von Städten und Industrie, zur Bewässerung in der Landwirtschaft sowie zur Hochwasserregulierung im Unterlauf. Ein Schifffahrtskanal (130 km) zum Hugli stellt eine Verbindung mit dem Industriegebiet von Kalkutta her. Zentren der Schwerindustrie sind Bokaro, Asansol mit Burnpur und Durgapur.
